First webinar of “Edit & Verify” project discusses social media verification methodologies and tools

Arab Fact-Checkers Network (AFCN) organized on November 8, 2021 its first webinar “Verify Social Media Content” in the framework of the “Edit and Verify” project in partnership with Meta Journalism Project, with a participation of about 300 on Zoom and 1100 participants on Facebook.

The trainer specializing in digital media, Samya Ayish, approached social media verification methodologies by understanding the nature of social media users and questioning every piece of information published on social media platforms. Afterwards, she shared with the audience the verification tools to identify real and fake content. Samya also differentiated between “debunking” and “prebunking” terms.

In the second part of the webinar, the lawyer, Khaled Khoulaifat, provided legal advice for journalists who deal on a regular basis with social media platforms. He clarified the demarcations between accountability and privacy. He also differentiated between freedom of expression and hate speech diffusion based on global standards.

In the last part of the webinar, the participants discuss the tools that need to be developed to fulfill the customized needs in the Arab World and the laws that need to be enacted to keep up with the rapid flow of fake news and information disorder.

The next webinar, “Verify Digital Ads” will be held on December 13, 2021. In it, the participants will be equipped with tools to verify the digital ads that pop up on all websites. Here is the registration form.

Edit & Verify, is a project that targets journalists, investigative journalists, content creators, and fact-checkers across the region with a focus on Algeria, Libya, Sudan, Yemen, Palestine, and Iraq, to raise their capacity and skills, and help them verify different types and forms of content disseminated online.
