AFCN concludes the third fact-checking workshop within #SA7 project

The Arab Fact-Checkers Network (AFCN) led by ARIJ, organised a remote workshop through ARIJ Academy on “Post-publication fact-checking”, between 14th and 17th of March 2022,  under the “Sa7” project. This project is part of the regional program “Qarib”, which is implemented by the French Agency for Media Development (CFI) and funded by the French Agency for Development (AFD).

During the four days of the workshop, the journalists and fact-checkers Samya Ayesh and Ahmed Ashour from the ARIJ team, trained 20 journalists from various media organisations and freelance journalists, as well as fact checkers from fact-checking organisations/initiatives and freelance fact-checkers, on the methodology and tools of post-publication fact-checking. 

During the workshop, the participants learned how to select good sources, verify evidence, and conduct an in-depth research process. They were also trained in tools that help to fact-check photos, videos, and social media content.

Madhat Hajjaj, Palestinian photo journalist, stated: “I benefited a lot from this workshop, not only we learnt techniques to fact-check but also we were introduced to open source tools”.

Aseel Abuarida, Jordanian journalist says: “I learnt a lot from this workshop, especially about how to fact-check different information like photos, videos and articles.”

It is worth noting that the “Sa7” project aims to promote best practices, methodologies, and tools for fact-checking in the Arab region, particularly in four countries facing political, economic, and security challenges and where public trust in the media is diminishing, which are; Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, and Iraq.
