Dalil 5th Webinar : How to Automate Fact-Checking?
October 5, 2022
The Arab Fact-Checkers Network (AFCN) led by ARIJ organised the fifth webinar within Dalil project under the title “How to Automate Fact-Checking?”, which is supported by the European Union, and in cooperation with “SIREN” in Lebanon and “JOSA” in Jordan.
The Full Fact team members, David Corney, Chief Data Scientist, and Kate Wilkinson, Senior Product Manager, both trained in the webinar, which was moderated by Saja Mortada, AFCN manager, spanned about two hours, and was attended by more than 260 participants.
The team addressed the process of automating fact-checking by exploiting artificial intelligence technology from several aspects. The trainers reviewed the recent advancement and tools in this field using examples, in addition to the challenges facing developers such as the difficulty of introducing natural languages for machine learning.
During the session, the team answered questions from the participants, and expressed their willingness to conduct demos for fact-checking platforms/initiatives interested in using Full Fact tools.
Iman Nayef, a participant from Palestine who is interested in fact-checking, says, “I learned from the webinar how artificial intelligence can be useful in accelerating the process of fact-checking, also exploring the advantages of fullfact.org tools in checking allegations, especially statistics.”
Yazan Abdel Hamid, a Jordanian fact-checker, wishes that the Arabic language would be added to all automated fact-checking applications.
It is worth mentioning that the Dalil project for the “Arab Fact-Checkers Network” led by ARIJ, is supported by the European Union and in cooperation with SIREN and JOSA. The project aims to increase the production of accurate news and information in seven countries in the Middle East and North Africa (Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Palestine, Morocco, Tunisia and Yemen).
