AFCN & Alfanar organized an In-person Training for Jordanian Students in Media Literacy and Fact-Checking





The Arab fact-checkers Network (AFCN) from ARIJ conducted “Media Literacy and the Basics of Fact-Checking” workshop, in cooperation with AlFanar Media organisation, with the aim of enhancing knowledge and skills that help university students in Jordan to enhance critical thinking skills to understand the media content they consume and distinguish between misleading and accurate information.
During the four-day training at ARIJ office in Amman from Thursday 27- 30 June 2024, 13 students from media faculties in five Jordanian universities in media colleges, the workshop trainers: Nadia El-Gowely, Executive Director of AlFanar, Fatima Bani Ahmad, ARIJ’s AFCN fact-checker, provided the students with knowledge and skills that help them possess and develop advanced critical thinking skills, evaluating the media content and to monitor mis/disinformation in social media, the different forms of deep fakes and biassed media, the post-publication fact-checking methodology and it’s tools, and misleading using AI.
The students have also learned about best ethical practices and legal consequences in social media posting, hate speech, how to avoid it and develop a set of ethics for online communication.
Sultan Mughraby, a student from Zarqa University, describes his experience in the workshop: “It was an enriching learning experience that made me interested in fact-checking and to specialise in it in the future. I am also happy to meet new colleagues who participated in this workshop.”
Aya Aish, a student from Applied Science Private University mentioned that after the workshop, her perception and way of thinking about the media content totally changed, and she will start analysing and thinking before sharing any news.
The workshop was held in collaboration with Alfanar Media, within the “Media Literacy” project, supported by Ford Foundation.
