The Arab Fact-Checkers Network (AFCN) led by ARIJ, organised its first “Dalil” webinar on Monday 12th of June, which is supported by the European Union, in partnership with “Siren” in Lebanon and “JOSA” in Jordan.
In this webinar, The OSINT specialist and the digital media trainer “Eoghan Sweeney“, elucidated the use of maps and geolocation technologies to verify images and videos, as they are among the most important OSINT tools used by fact-checkers to verify the geographical places in the digital media content.
The session was moderated by “Mohammad Komani“, an investigative journalist and trainer at ARIJ, and was attended by more than 130 participants from different Arab countries. The session included many exercises and case study examples that received great interaction from the participants through questions and comments.
At the end of the session, the trainer answered the questions of all participants, and also tested their comprehension through a challenge, asking them to find out a location on the map by analysing the information in the image only, then a discussion followed about the answers and the different points of view regarding the challenge.
This webinar is a part of a series of webinars conducted by AFCN under ‘Dalil’ project, and the second in the series will be about “The art of interviewing for fact-checkers and journalists” delivered by ARIJ General Director “Rawan Damen”.
It is worth mentioning that “Dalil” is one of AFCN projects led by ARIJ, and aims to increase media literacy and access to accurate information in seven countries in the MENA region (Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Palestine, Morocco, Tunisia & Yemen).
