Fact-checking Social Media Content: Dalil’s 3rd webinar
The Arab Fact-Checkers Network (AFCN) led by ARIJ, organised its third webinar on Monday 10th of July under “Dalil” project, which is supported by the European Union, in partnership with “Siren” in Lebanon and “JOSA” in Jordan.
The trainer in the webinar was Samya Ayish, ARIJ communication manager, explaining the most essential ways and tools for fact-checking content on social media, with focusing on Instagram and TikTok platforms, in addition to other platforms.
Safaa Al-Ramahi, Training and innovation specialist at ARIJ, moderated the webinar and maintained effective discussion throughout the session by conveying the questions of the 150 participants to be answered by the trainer. She also added many case studies regarding the topics of the webinar.
The session received great interaction from the audience towards the important notes raised by the trainer on how to deal with misleading content on social media, given examples as the tweet alleged to be posted by “Elon Musk”, the CEO of twitter, criticising “Mark zuckerberg”, the CEO of Facebook, for “copying” his platform when creating the new “Meta” platform “Threads” and calling him “Lizard boy”.
The trainer explained to the participants how to perceive such content which she labelled as “too good or too bad to be true”, and also explained how to verify such profiles sharing controversial content and answered all questions about the tools being used in fact-checking social media content and how to use them.
This webinar is a part of a series of webinars conducted by AFCN under ‘Dalil’ project. The second in the series was held on Monday July 3rd 2023, under the title “The art of interviewing for fact-checkers and journalists” delivered by ARIJ Director General “Rawan Damen”.
It is worth mentioning that “Dalil” is one of AFCN projects led by ARIJ, and aims to increase media literacy and access to accurate information in seven countries in the MENA region (Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Palestine, Morocco, Tunisia & Yemen).
