ARIJ Fact-Checking diploma under Dalil project in 2023

The Arab fact-checkers Network (AFCN) from ARIJ concluded on Wednesday, September 14, the fact-checking Diploma programme that launched in March 2023. The diplome targeted 38 fact-checkers from 7 Arab countries under Dalil project; in order to improve the Arab network community members and develop their capabilities in fact-checking for 6 months intensively..
From March 15 to October 13, 2023, the trainees participated in more than 20 sessions, each session was for three hours through Zoom and ARIJ academy, and it covered: basics of fact-checking and the most important terms, pre- and post-publication fact-checking, political statements,scientific and health information fact-checking, research and investigation of open sources such as Internet archives and Geolocation, advanced research skills, writing skills and storytelling, environmental and climate change fact-checking, data fact-checking and the effective use of social media to reach a wider audience.
These topics were trained by 10 trainers from different Arab countries. They were: Saja Mortada, Joyce Hanna, Hussein Al-Sharif, Fatima Bani Ahmad, Haneen Haddad, Samya Ayish, Abdullah Maksour, Ahmad Ashour, Rahma Diaa and Ethar Azem. During the diploma, trainees underwent a midterm exam, all passed it, in addition to submission of 4 main assignments.

29 trainees out of 38, from 6 Arab countries and 19 fact-checking organisations/initiatives, have reached the end of the program (Jordan, Yemen, Lebanon, Iraq, Palestine and Morocco). Participants are currently working on the final projects in which they must apply the basic skills they learned during the diploma. Projects that will be specialised in fact-checking information related to environment and climate change, will be published in October and November 2023 on AFCN’ website and the sites of the fact-checkers’ organisations/initiatives. This Diploma is conducted by AFCN under ‘Dalil’ project. It’s worth mentioning that “Dalil” is one of AFCN projects supported by the EU, in partnership with “Siren” and “Josa”, and aims to enhance fact-checking and access to accurate information in seven countries in the MENA region (Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Palestine, Morocco, Tunisia & Yemen).
