AFCN organises an “Introduction to AI in Journalism and Fact-checking” workshop

Within the framework of the ARIJ23 annual forum, entitled “Cross-Border Collaboration in a Fragmented World“, from 1 to 3rd of December 2023, the ARIJ’s AFCN organised an “Introduction to AI in Journalism and Fact-checking” workshop in collaboration with the Norwegian Foundation for a Free and Investigative Press (SKUP), which took place between November 28-30.
In this workshop, 6 professional trainers specialised in the field of fact-checking and AI participated. On the first day, ARIJ’s digital transformation consultant, Khaled Waleed, covered the infrastructure of AI and how it can be used in journalistic work and fact-checking to save time and effort, and the AFCN manager, Saja Mortada, presented the fact-checking basics and methodology and how it is related to AI.
The second day, the trainer and open source analyst from the Bellingcat, Nick Waters, presented the most important methods of verifying images and videos, especially those generated and modified with AI techniques. Bellingcat training was organised and supported by GIJN (Global Investigative Journalism Network) and IMS, and was presented by GIJN Arabic editor Majdoleen Hasan. This was followed by the fact-checker trainer from Annir platform, Jehad Oumer offered an AI technical session.
On the third day, the trainers Dr. Arwa Kooli and Sabrina Argoub trained about the most important applications of AI tools and automation techniques in promoting press operations and ethical considerations for the use of AI in their work. Participants graduated on the last day at a special ceremony sponsored by the Norwegian Embassy in Amman and certificates to participants were handed by the Norwegian Ambassador in Jordan.
